What Is Etsy?

If you’re looking to start selling your products online, you may be wondering: is Etsy the right platform for me? What is Etsy and what benefits does it offer sellers?

Etsy is an online marketplace that specializes in selling handmade, vintage, digital and unique items.

It’s a popular platform for people who make their own products, as well as for people who sell vintage finds or antiques.

Since it launched in 2005, Etsy has become a go-to platform for people looking to start their own creative businesses. In fact, there are currently over 4 million active sellers on the site and even more buyers!

How Does Etsy Work?

If you’re thinking about selling on Etsy, it’s important to understand how the platform works. When you set up an Etsy shop, you’ll create listings for your products.

Each listing will include a product photo, description, price, and shipping information. When a customer finds a listing they’re interested in and makes a purchase, you’ll receive an email notification from Etsy.

You’ll then package and ship the item to the customer’s address. Once the buyer receives their purchase and is happy with it, they’ll leave a review on your listing.

It’s also important to note that Etsy charges fees for every transaction that takes place on the site. For example, there is a $0.20 fee for each listing that you create and a 6.5% transaction fee for each item that you sell.

Additionally, if you use Etsy Payments to process credit card payments, there is a 3% + $0.25 fee for each transaction.

How Much Money Can You Make on Etsy?

Now that we’ve gone over the basics of how Etsy works, let’s talk about how much money you can make by selling on the platform.

The amount of money you can make on Etsy will depend on a few different factors:

  • the price of your products
  • expenses to create your products
  • the number of items you sell
  • the fees associated with each transaction

The amount of money you can make on Etsy will vary widely depending on your niche and these factors.

Let’s take a look at some real-life examples to give you an idea of how much money people typically make in their first year of selling on Etsy. You probably want to know: how much does the average Etsy seller make?

According to this article from Sale Samurai, the average successful Etsy seller brings in between $43,000 and $46,000 in their first year, while top sellers can make over $65,000!

Of course, it’s important to keep in mind that these are just averages. Some people make less money, while others make much more.

There are some sellers who make almost a million dollars a year selling on Etsy. There are also many, many more that make less than $10,000. Personally, selling on Etsy I only made $5,400 that first year!

In general, a good estimate is that you can comfortable make anywhere between $5,000 and $50,000 in your first year selling on Etsy.

Etsy Seller Income Examples

Let’s look at some specific examples of how much Etsy sellers have made on the platform.

These Etsy sellers have shared how much they make on Etsy but remember they are at varying levels of knowledge and success.

  • My Wealth Diary sells on Etsy and reports her earnings as $4,000 her first year, $75,600 her second year, and $83,600 the next year from selling digital products.
  • Etsy Seller Liberty Island Farm reported earning $53,526.29 in her first year with a profit of $37,000 before taxes.
  • Jenni at Fuzzy and Birch’s story includes making -$37 her first month and working up to consistent $4,000 per month selling on Etsy.
  • Jamie shared a blog post that her shop Handmade Journey made $53,000 in her first year with a profit margin of 70%.
  • Erin of Urban Wood Goods had a revenue of $35,000 her first year and $635,000 her second year, the majority of it from Etsy she told HuffPost.

These Etsy income examples show you how much you could potentially make by selling products on Etsy.

How Much Can You Make on Etsy a Month?

The amount of money you can make on Etsy in a month will depend on the same factors as your annual earnings.

To get an idea of how much money people typically make in a month, let’s take a look at the average annual salary example above and break it down.

If we assume that the average Etsy seller brings in $45,000 in their first year, that means they’re making around $3,750 per month.

But, of course, this is just an estimate. Some people make more, while others make less.

It is also important to keep in mind that not all months are created equal when it comes to sales. For example, you may find that you sell more items during the holiday season than at any other time of year.

How Much Money Can You Make on Etsy in a Day?

The amount of money you can make on Etsy in a day will also depend on the same factors as your annual and monthly earnings.

Let’s again take the average annual salary example above and break it down to get an idea of how much money people typically make in a day.

If we assume that the average Etsy seller brings in $45,000 in their first year, that means they’re making around $125 per day.

Is It Easy to Sell on Etsy?

Selling on Etsy is relatively easy to get started, and the platform is user-friendly.

However, it can be tough to stand out from the crowd and make a consistent profit, especially if you’re selling low-priced items.

If you’re thinking about selling on Etsy, be sure to do your research and create unique, high-quality listings.

You’ll also need to be prepared to put in some time and effort into promoting your shop and marketing your products.

Not only will you need to be creative and product good products, but you’ll need to make sure you handle all the legal aspects of selling items. This will include things like choosing a bank account for your Etsy shop, creating legal policies, and other related tasks.

How To Make 6 Figures on Etsy

It is possible to make six figures on Etsy, but it isn’t easy.

If it was, every Etsy seller would be consistently making six figures per year.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the amount of money you can make on Etsy will depend on a number of factors, from the types of products you’re selling, your pricing strategy, and your marketing efforts.

That being said, if you want to make six figures on Etsy, you’ll need to focus on selling high-priced items and attracting a steady stream of customers to your shop.

To hit the $100,000 mark in revenue you will need to sell at least $274 per day for 365 days.

Or you can set the goal for month sales of $8,334 per month.

Breaking down your revenue goals into smaller targets makes it easier. You can also likely plan for higher numbers in months like November and December when people are purchasing holiday gifts.

If you’re willing to put in the work, it is possible to make a significant income by selling on Etsy.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that success is not guaranteed. There’s no guarantee that you’ll make six figures in your first year of selling. If you keep working and improving your shop you could hit that goal in time.

Bottom Line

If you’re thinking about selling on Etsy, there’s a good chance that you’ll be able to find success on the platform. However, it’s important to keep in mind that the amount of money you make will depend on a variety of factors, including the price of your products and the fees associated with each transaction.

Before you get started, be sure to do your research and understand how the platform works. This will help you set realistic expectations for your earnings and avoid any surprises down the road.

What Products Sell Best On Etsy?

If you want to make a lot of money on Etsy then you probably want to sell products that buyers love.

Not sure what things to sell in your Etsy shop? There are a few different factors that you’ll need to consider when choosing what products to sell on Etsy.

Deciding What To Sell

First, you’ll need to decide if you want to sell handmade items, vintage items, or both. If you choose to sell handmade items, you’ll need to create high quality and unique products. You’ll also be limited by your time and physical capacity.

You’ll also need to think about what types of products are popular on Etsy. Some popular categories include jewelry, clothing, home decor, and art. Selling something that is constantly trending can lead to many more sales.

Finally, you’ll need to consider the price of your products. In general, items that are priced between $20 and $50 tend to do well on Etsy. This price point is easy for buyers to impulse purchase and it’s also high enough to give you a decent profit margin on many products.

Product Ideas To Sell On Etsy

If you’re not sure what types of products to sell, take some time to browse the site and see what other sellers are offering. This will give you a good idea of what’s popular on Etsy and what types of products are selling well.

Personally I’ve always sold digital products on Etsy. It’s my favorite product because Etsy makes selling them very easy and passive! Not sure what digital products are or what to sell? Check out these lists for ideas:
