  • Pros and Cons Of Being A YouTuber

After quitting my job to build a media business on YouTube I’ve learned there are many pros and cons of being a YouTuber.

Being a YouTubers allows me massive amounts of freedom with my time and energy, but has many downsides too.

Pros and Cons Of Being A YouTuber

Becoming a YouTuber is much more common these days. YouTube is a huge platform that supports many creators with a full time living.

But what is being a YouTuber really like? What are the pros and cons of being a YouTuber?

Pros of being a full-time YouTuber:

    • Unlimited income potential. Unlike a regular job, there is no limit on your income with YouTube. You have the opportunity to earn as much money as you possibly can. YouTube has allowed many regular people to become millionaires because of this.
    • Ability to work on your passion. With YouTube you are able to follow your passion no matter what it is. There are full-time YouTubers creating content in many obscure niches. If you obsessed with a topic then you will find a community on YouTube.
    • No requirements to start. Starting a YouTube channel has no requirements. You can start at any age and there is no degree or other requirement to fulfill first. All you need to start on the path to becoming a YouTuber is the desire to create, learn and improve.
    • Remote and flexible work. One of the best things about being a YouTuber is the freedom of when and how you work. You won’t have to stay on a 9 to 5 schedule. These is no need for an office. You can work from anywhere and become a digital nomad if you want.
    • Less pressure and deadlines. My personal favorite perk of being a YouTuber is the lack of pressure. You do need to stick to some level of consistent content production but there are no strict deadlines or bosses directing your work. You can work when you want to and publish content as you want.

Cons of being a full-time YouTuber:

    • Burnout. It’s incredibly easy to burnout as a YouTube content creator. Creating high quality videos consistently can be draining. The need to be creative and deliver the best videos to your audience can lead to burnout.
    • Mental challenges. There are a lot of unique mental challenges for YouTubers. The comment sections can be harsh for mental health and many creators work alone leading to loneliness. Many creators also struggle with internal pressure to succeed and can’t handle channel failures.
    • Content plagiarism. It can be frustrating to create viral videos that immediately get copied by other creators. Unfortunately that is how YouTube works and something YouTubers have to deal with as creators.

    Is YouTube a Good Career?

There are many pros and cons of being a YouTuber, but is YouTube a good career overall?

Many people debate if YouTube even is a job. Some people don’t think YouTube can be considered a career at all.

For people who know YouTube is a real career we are often split on whether YouTube is a good job.

Some people think being a YouTuber is amazing while others hate it even though it pays the bills. Often it comes down to personality.

Can you handle “haters” with a thick skin? Can you take criticism in stride and improve your videos? Do you love the challenge to constantly learn and grow? Are you comfortable working alone for long stretches of time?

It depends on the person as to whether or not being a YouTuber will be the right career fit.

For success on YouTube you’ll need to have time or money, drive, vision, and creativity similar to entrepreneurs. Successful YouTubers are running a business. Just like with entrepreneurs, it is not for everyone.

  • Is YouTube A Job?

Are you curious if being a YouTuber can be a career? Have you ever wondered is YouTube a job? If so then you are in the right place.

Over time being a YouTube content creator has gone from a random hobby to a potential job and even the path to fame and fortune for some. These days many kids say they want to grow up and be a YouTuber.

But is being a YouTuber a realistic career choice? Can you make YouTube your job or should people settle for more traditional careers?

Is being a YouTuber a good job?

As a YouTuber who made YouTube my job, I’m happy to share what I know about this topic.

Let’s look at everything you might want ton know about doing YouTube full time.

Can YouTube Be A Full Time Job?

When people ask is YouTube a job what they really want to know is can YouTube be a full time job?

Can you really do YouTube full time instead of working a typical 9 to 5 job?

The answer is YES! YouTube can be a full-time job.

As a platform YouTube generates as much attention as many TV channels and it is continuing to grow. There is a huge audience on YouTube that is always looking for new content to consume.

These days you can create your own full-time job on YouTube without even being a huge star. There are many small but passionate niche communities on a variety of topics. Within these smaller communities people have found a way to create enough income to make YouTube their job.

While the media likes to focus on YouTube stars who have become wealthy, there are many more of these creators who have simply made YouTube their job.

Unfortunately even with many more people making YouTube their job there are many more who fail to do so.

The majority of YouTube creators never make enough money for it to be their full-time job. The income they make from YouTube simply isn’t enough to cover their expenses.

Success is not guaranteed on YouTube, but it is possible. With creativity, strategy, and consistency you can earn a full-time income on YouTube.

    Is YouTube A Good Job?

Another thing people usually want to know: is YouTube a good job?

Even if someone manages to make a “full-time income” on YouTube, is it actually a good job? Are YouTubers happy? Is it a career worth pursuing?

The top YouTube stars make it look like a glamorous career similar to being a Hollywood star. However, there are also many downsides to doing YouTube full time.

Let’s look at some of the pros and cons of doing YouTube as your job. These can help you decide if YouTube would be a good job for you.

    YouTuber Job Pros:

    • Unlimited potential: There is no limited to how much money you can earn.
    • Potential fame: Depending on your success you can achieve fame in small or large ways.
    • Semi-passive income: You can continue earning more for work you did months or years ago.
    • Off camera opportunities: Successful YouTubers receive many opportunities.
    • Many career spin-offs: You learn many skills that can translate to other jobs and careers.

    YouTuber Job Cons:

    • Stress: Creating on YouTube can be stressful for a number of reasons.
    • Judgement: There is a lot of negative feedback on YouTube. This does not work for some people.
    • Heavy workload: Until you can afford outsourcing you have to do a lot of jobs yourself, from being on camera to editing to promoting and more.
    • No guaranteed income: There is not a guarantee of income and your income can dry up overnight.
    Is YouTube A Job?

Like with any career path, your personality will likely determine whether YouTube is right for you.

You might be able to overlook the downsides and thrive with the possibilities. If you have a thick skin, love to work hard, and love unlimited opportunity then YouTube might be the job for you. If that’s the case then your happiness is possible in this job.

Most successful full-time YouTube creators I know are like entrepreneurs and treat their channel as a business. If you go in with that mindset you are more likely to enjoy YouTube as a job.

    What Skills Do YouTubers Need?

If you want to make YouTube your job, what skills do you need? YouTube is more than just shooting quick videos on your phone.

Creating a successful YouTube channel that produces a full-time income will require many skills. All of these skills are actually jobs in their own right and professionals specialize in each. Knowing how to do all of these things is one reason YouTube is so hard for people.

Here are some skills needed by content creators on YouTube:

    • Video planning
    • Research
    • Scriptwriting
    • Video production
    • Video editing
    • Audio editing
    • Graphic design
    • Search engine optimization (SEO)

You will find that learning these skills takes time and a lot of hard work. You likely won’t be good at all of them but they are all required to succeed on YouTube.

When you look at all of the things you need to know and do to succeed on YouTube it is easy to understand how it can be a job.

How To Make YouTube A Career

Maybe everything so far sounds amazing and you want to make YouTube your career. How do you actually do that?

I’ve seen people waste a lot of time trying to make YouTube their full-time job. There are a lot of activities that feel productive but lead to no progress. If you can avoid those you can make YouTube your job within 1 to 2 years of hard work.

Here are some steps to make YouTube your career:

    1. Choose your direction
    2. Research your niche
    3. Define your brand and USP
    4. Create good videos
    5. Optimize your content
    6. Build relationships
    7. Publish videos consistently

Now we will look at all of these in more detail and how to make them happen. If you want a guide to help you, the YouTube success workbook I created has worksheets for setting up a successful channel and planning your videos.

    YouTube Success Planner

Get organized and succeed on YouTube! Streamline your processes and hit your goals by getting organized with this YouTube planner with multiple sections on content planning, channel analytics, monetization, and more.

    Choose Your Direction

Choosing your direction is the first step to making YouTube your job.

What does this mean? It means sitting down and thinking through what type of creator you actually want to be.

What audience will you create content for? What topics will you cover that they want to see? How will you serve this specific audience with your videos?

A lot of creators want to create either a variety of videos or focus on their lives. The problem with these types of channels is that honestly… no one cares. When you are new and don’t have an audience and these types of videos will get you a few random subscribers but little traction.

Choosing a niche and an audience to serve will give you direction. It will allow your channel to grow faster and become a job quicker.

This can obviously change as you start creating and find out what really works for you. However, you are more likely to succeed if you have some direction when you start.

When your goal is to earn an income to live off of you will have to know what audience you are serving so you can monetize quicker and more efficiently.

Not sure what niche to serve? Check out the most profitable niches on YouTube.

    Research Your Niche

Once you’ve chosen an audience to serve you need to research who is already serving this audience.

That means you need to research the competition within your niche. You will learn a lot about what works and doesn’t work by examining what your competitors are already doing.

When you start to research your niche you should look at the biggest creators and also the biggest videos from smaller creators.

When you study the big creators in your niche you will be able to see how they succeeded. You can determine what they did to succeed and they try to do it again for yourself.

One of the best things to do when trying to grow on YouTube is to re-create videos that blew up for small creators. In your research you will likely find small channels with a few videos that have many views. These video topics are a good start for videos to create.

Knowing what has actually worked in your niche with your audience will save you a lot of time. There is no need to reinvent the wheel. You just need to recreate what works with your own unique spin on it.

Need some help getting started? Check out the best books for YouTubers.

    Define Your Brand

Having your own unique spin is what will allow you to go from a failure to a success on YouTube.

This unique selling point for your channel is how you will differentiate your brand while still making similar videos to your competition. Deciding on your branding and unique selling point is a good way to show your audience you are serious and plan to be a full-time creator.

When you are creating your brand you will consider many things.

You’ll have to decide things like:

    • tone
    • style of presentation
    • video settings and backdrops
    • your clothing
    • props in your videos

Then you will also decide your branding elements like:

    • channel banner
    • profile picture
    • logo
    • in-video elements
    • video editing/transitions

All of these things will come together to create your brand. It will steer how your audience thinks of you and your videos.

If you want to do YouTube as a job you’ll want to take these branding elements seriously.

    Create Good Videos

YouTube videos don’t have to be cinema quality production but they do need to be good content.

This means you need to create good, entertaining content that is free from off-putting technical issues. No one will sit through your videos if you have bad audio or they can’t see you because of lighting.

Creating consistent high-quality videos is the way to create a full-time income on YouTube.

    This means your videos need:

    • educational or entertainment value
    • high quality audio
    • good production value
    • decent editing
    • consistent style

Doing all of these things will make sure your videos have value for your audience. You don’t have to film and upload in 4k or worry about nit-picky details but you do need to make sure your videos are good content people would want to watch.

Make sure to keep the style and quality consistent among your videos so your fans know what to expect. This will also mean new subscribers are more likely to go back and watch old videos.

    Optimize Your Content

Creating a good video on YouTube is only the first step. You have to optimize your content for distribution as well. If you want to make money on YouTube then you must have more people watch your videos.

There are many elements of optimizing your content:

    • attention-grabbing title
    • eye-catching thumbnail
    • relevant keywords for SEO
    • promotion on YouTube & social media

All of these elements can intrigue viewers to click on and watch your videos. These are also elements you will constantly be working on and improving over time. Each new video is a chance to improve things like your thumbnail or title.

When you are just starting out on YouTube you will likely want to focus on gaining views by SEO. This is the easiest way to get consistent views as a beginner and it’s also a great way to build income for your channel over time. With good SEO YouTube will rank your videos in the search results and encourage people to view them.

When you are new it make sense to use a tool like TubeBuddy to help you with SEO. TubeBuddy let’s you research keywords to use for videos and gives tips on how to actually optimize your content.

    Build Relationships

The best thing I did when growing my own YouTube channels was to build relationships with other YouTube creators.

The relationships with other creators led to collaborations on videos, more views on videos, masterminds, opportunities, and even real friendships.

In the beginning you will have zero relationships so you have to build them. The best way to do this is to reach out to other small, newer creators. You can comment on their videos and reach out on social media. It’s best to start with smaller creators because large creators are often too busy and you can get overlooked.

There are also many groups on Facebook and other platforms where you can find people trying to go full-time on YouTube. Finding people with the same goal as you makes the journey to full-time YouTuber much easier.

It’s also a great idea to build relationships with your audience and super-fans. You will recognize people who comment on every video and responding to these comments is a great way to build relationships. You can also encourage them to follow you on social media or join your email list for more contact.

    Publish Videos Consistently

The number one thing that leads to success on YouTube is consistent publishing.

When you publish videos consistently you learn quickly what works and what doesn’t. You also improve your skills and end up making better videos. Like Roberto Blake says, you will probably make 100 crappy videos before you start to succeed.

YouTube is a lot of work. Views will not roll in just because you made a video. You have to promote your work and consistently improve the quality of that work.

While YouTube can be a great hobby, the successful creators who make it a job treat it as a job. We have schedules and routines that allow us to create consistently over time.

Over time as you create and publish more videos you’ll eventually discover a schedule that works for you. You’ll improve your skills and work faster too!

The number one thing I recommend if you want to make YouTube your job is to be patient. It won’t happen overnight and it will take a lot of work and patience.

You will probably spend at 1 to 3 years working on YouTube before it becomes a sustainable job for you. can you be patient and work hard for that long without immediate results? If so then you can succeed with YouTube.

Is Being a YouTuber a Job?

Is being a YouTuber a job? A pipe dream? Or a luxury? You probably are still curious after reading about how few people succeed to make this dream into a real job.

Being a YouTuber is a job but it is more than that. It’s multiple jobs (creator, editor, social media manager) and also a lifestyle. It is being an entrepreneur and running your own business.

The reality of creating videos full-time on YouTube might be different than you expected.

However, if you have a passion for creating videos and are willing to work hard then there is no limit to what you can achieve.

Is there a minimum length for a YouTube video for it to be monetized? How long does a YouTube video have to be to make money? How long should a video be to have ads?

These questions often come up with YouTube beginners.

Thankfully there is no minimum video length for monetization on Youtube. You can make money on YouTube with videos of any length.

Regardless of length your YouTube videos will still need to follow all other monetizations rules and guidelines to be eligible.

Can you monetize videos under 1 minute?

Is it possible to earn money on YouTube from videos less than 30 seconds? Can you monetize videos under 1 minute?

Many people want to make short videos but still monetize them on YouTube.

Luckily with the YouTube partner program you can make money with videos under 1 minute. These videos can still show ads before and after they play.

In fact, some creators make a lot of money with short videos. You can make short videos that viewers watch one after another with ads playing in between. This is a solid strategy to make money on YouTube.

The screenshot below shows one of my videos that is under 1 minute but still earning money.

As you can see from this example, videos under 1 minute can be monetized. They will earn money just like any other video on YouTube.

This video took me less than 5 minutes to make and upload but it will continue making money for months to come.

    Best Video Length For Monetization

The best video length for earning money on YouTube is the length that shows the most ads to viewers.

YouTube allows mid-roll ads in videos that are a minimum of 8 minutes long.

This means videos 8 minutes or longer can show more ads per viewing than shorter videos. This results in more money earned from ads.

The best video length for monetization is 8 minutes or longer. This is because you will earn more money from more ads being shown.

When you create longer videos with mid-roll ads you will want to balance monetization and user experience. If you place an ad every 30 seconds you will lose a lot of viewers forever. You want to increase the ad revenue without turning viewers off.

    Testing YouTube Video Lengths

Just because longer videos often earn more doesn’t mean they are right for your channel.

If you are better at creating short-form videos then focus on creating those shorter videos. Try to get these short videos seen by more people to earn more money.

Testing out different video lengths with your audience is a great way to find out where you can earn the most money while still creating quality videos.

If you want to earn the most money possible per video then you should aim for longer videos. You will be able to monetize with mid-roll ads and then also add in sponsorships with brands or affiliate marketing.

Videos on YouTube will earn money at any length. You have to decide what is right for your channel and video style.

You can see from my YouTube videos that I experiment with length often. Some of my shorter videos consistently earn more money than my long ones. A two minute video can earn many times what a 10 minute video earns if it gets more views.

Always focus on the quality of your videos. This will lead to more views and ultimately more money.

  • Most Profitable Niches On YouTube

Do you want to earn money making YouTube videos? If so then you likely want to know the most profitable niches on YouTube.

I recently came across a few posts listing profitable YouTube niches that was obviously incorrect. For example, gaming has historically low CPMs that mean you must have millions of views to make any amount of living wage income. This list clearly confused most popular and most profitable niches.

In this guide we will look at both the most popular niches and the most profitable niches on YouTube.

    Most Profitable Niches On YouTube

There are many profitable niches on YouTube that are relatively unknown but make creators a lot of money.

These niches are the most profitable for a variety of reasons:

    • high advertising rates
    • high value affiliate programs
    • brands willing to pay more

Below are some of the most profitable niches on YouTube:

    • Investing
    • Luxury
    • Personal Finance
    • Insurance
    • Real Estate
    • Mortgages
    • Loans
    • Credit Cards
    • Cryptocurrency
    • Business
    • Make Money Online
    • Social Media Marketing
    • Affiliate Marketing
    • Email Marketing
    • Software As A Service
    • E-commerce
    • Drop Shipping
    • Educational Videos

Many of these profitable niches could also be considered “high cpm niches” since they all tend to earn multiple times the standard ad rates on YouTube.

    Most Popular Niches On YouTube

The most popular niches on YouTube can be very hard to monetize.

Because they are popular it’s harder to standout and grow an audience. Without an audience in these niches you won’t be able to get brand deals or community support which are the main ways to monetize these topics.

Here are some of the most popular niches on YouTube:

    • Gaming
    • ASMR
    • Music
    • Tech & Gadgets
    • Cars
    • Food & Cooking Tutorials
    • Beauty
    • Fashion
    • Healthy Living & Fitness
    • Weight Loss
    • Travel
    • Animals
    • Pranks
    • Reactions
    • Vlogs & Lifestyle

Of course this list is not extensive and there are other popular niche ideas you may want to consider.

This also doesn’t mean you can’t make a profit or a large income in these popular niches. It’s just harder.

These topics can be harder to break into but if you rise to the top you can earn a lot of money in a popular niche as well!

The Reality Of Profitable YouTube Niches

So what’s the real deal with these niches?

There is no definitive way to say which YouTube niche will make you the most money.

Every niche on YouTube has creators making a lot of money. There are even more in each niche making no money.

The amount of money you make on YouTube will depend on a variety of factors including:

    • niche / video topics
    • length of your videos and audience retention
    • ad rates and number of ads shown
    • channel quality for ads
    • audience location and demographics
    • potential for brand sponsorships
    • ability to promote affiliate offers and products
    • community strength for support

There are many different ways to make money with your YouTube channel, from ads to affiliate marketing to sponsorships and more.

Even if you plan to monetize your YouTube channel through brand deals or affiliate marketing you will want to know about YouTube’s policies.

On YouTube you can earn money from the ads showing on your videos by joining the YouTube Partner Program (YPP).

The YouTube Partner program let’s eligible creators earn revenue by ads and multiple other built-in revenue streams.

    • 1:1 chat and email support
    • use of the Copyright Match tool

Joining the program when you are eligible allows you access to tools you need to succeed and make money on YouTube.

    YouTube Partner Program Eligibility

In order to unlock all the features and earning ability you have to first qualify to join the YouTube Partner Program.

    • have 4,000 valid public watch hours in the previous 12 months
    • have at least 1,000 subscribers
    • be in good standing with YouTube
    • follow all YouTube Monetization policies
    • live in a country where the YPP is available
    • have a linked Adsense account
    YouTube Monetization Policy Requirements

The main hurdle for many new creators is having 4,000 hours of watch hours and the 1,000 subscribers. For many creators this can take many months or even years to achieve.

Once you’re in the partner program, you can then start earning money.

You can earn money on your videos from ads and from YouTube Premium subscribers watching your videos. Then you can explore other revenue streams besides ads, like channel memberships or Super Chats.

Depending on your type of channel you can potentially earn from multiple revenue streams all through the YouTube Partner Program.

Ways To Make Money In The YouTube Partner Program

Creators in the YPP earn money in multiple ways beyond ad revenue.

You can make money on YouTube in many ways:

    • Advertising revenue: Earn ad revenue from display ads, overlay ads, and video ads
    • YouTube Premium revenue: Earn part of a subscriber’s subscription fee when they watch your content on YouTube
    • Channel memberships: Allow people to join as a member and pay a monthly payment in exchange for special perks
    • Super Chat & Super Stickers: Fans can pay to have their messages highlighted in chat streams
    • Merch Shelf: Show off your channel’s branded merchandise for fans to browse and buy on your video pages

All of these monetization methods are great ways to make money as a YouTube creator.

    YouTube Monetization Policy Eligibility Requirements

Each method of monetization on YouTube has it’s own individual requirements beyond the basic acceptance into the YouTube Partner Program.

Here are the current requirements for features as of 2022:

Advertising revenue: Be at least 18 years old and create ad friendly content
YouTube Premium revenue: Create content viewed by YouTube premium subscribers
Channel memberships: Be at least 18 years old and have more than 1,000 subscribers
Super Chat & Super Stickers: Be at least 18 years old and live in a country where Super Chat is available
Merch Shelf: Be at least 18 years old and have more than 10,000 subscribers

    YouTube Monetization Policy Details

YouTube’s policy for monetizing your channel with ad revenue has undergone multiple changes over the years. There are several things you must follow under YouTube monetization policies in order to earn money with this program.

Your channel must follow all of the policies in each of the following:

Reading these policies thoroughly is the best way to make sure you are following them and your content is suitable to monetize or not.

Each time you upload a video and want to monetize it you’ll have to confirm that your content follows these policies and is eligible for advertising.

YouTube can and will review channels against their monetization policy and other policies. You can see a good guide of which policies will be reviewed and how you can make sure you follow them correctly from Google’s guide here.

    How Do YouTube Ads Work?

Understanding how ad revenue works on YouTube is the key to earning money as a creator.

Watching videos about how much YouTube pays creators for views is a great way to understand advertising revenue and to learn what you can earn.

In this video I show what YouTube paid me for 2.5 million views on a DIY video. This example is from a video where I did not show my face. It was a tutorial video showing my hands only!

YouTube pays video creators a split of the ad revenue on each video and your total revenue will depend on the views you can get along with other factors.

How Much Money Can You Make?

The real question people want to know: how much money can you make on YouTube? How much can you make with ads?

Unfortunately this is an impossible question to answer because ad revenue varies widely among creators and topics on YouTube.

Ad revenue on videos is determined by factors like:

    • audience location
    • audience demographics
    • interaction with the ad
    • number of ads in a video
    • topic of the video content
    • what advertisers are willing to pay

You can’t control everything related to ad revenue since there are so many factors. But you can work on getting more and more views which will turn into income for you.

Some types of content naturally make more money than others. Videos on finance or business will pay much more than videos on gaming for example.

You can see many examples of what creators get paid in the YouTube Partner Program by searching for things like “YouTube paid me” or “YouTube income report”. Here’s one of my YouTube income report videos:

Each month I earn over $4,000 just from the ad revenue on my YouTube content.

This is in addition to other ways I monetize on YouTube with things like affiliate marketing and digital products.

  • Free B-Roll For YouTube Cash Cow Channels

If you are creating faceless YouTube videos then you’ll need to find b-roll to create those videos. In this post we look at places to find free b-roll for YouTube cash cow channels and other videos.

How To Find Free B-Roll For YouTube Videos | EASY B ROLL For Growing On YouTube

    What Is B-Roll?

B-roll is the extra footage you add into a video to make the story better by having a more versatile and interesting video.

It makes video editing more flexible and easier. B roll footage can include video, still photos, animation, or other graphics.

For cash cow YouTube videos where you are not the focus of the video, you’ll need various types of b-roll to create your video content. Sourcing and putting together b-roll footage is a huge part of creating videos without showing your face.

Related: Make Money On YouTube Without Showing Your Face

    Where To Find Free B-Roll

There are several websites that offer free videos you can use as b-roll in YouTube videos.

One of my favorite b-roll sources is the website called Pexels. They claim to be “The best free stock photos, royalty free images & videos shared by creators.”

As a creator I believe the best part of Pexels is that they keep the licensing and legal side simple.

As they explain: “All photos and videos on Pexels can be downloaded and used for free.”

Here are some additional details they offer about using the b-roll:

    • All photos and videos on Pexels are free to use.
    • Attribution is not required.
    • Giving credit to the photographer or Pexels is not necessary but always appreciated.
    • You can modify the photos and videos from Pexels. Be creative and edit them as you like.

This makes things incredibly easy as a YouTube creator who needs to use other people’s videos to create a channel!

Pexels.com free b-roll for YouTube cash cow channels

    More Free B-Roll Websites

Pexels has been my go to for b-roll for YouTube videos, but there are other free b-roll websites.

Here are several free b-roll websites you can use:

In addition to these free b-roll websites you can also find many sites where you can purchase b-roll footage at a low rate.

    Using Free B-Roll Footage Websites

These are best free B-roll footage websites available to help create cash cow YouTube channels.

There are a few things you need to keep in mind whenever you are using these free b-roll footage websites.

First, keep licensing and fine print in mind as you choose the videos you want to use. Do your due diligence and read the small print and licensing details attached to the video content.

Second, credit video creators where necessary and also when possible. Giving credit to the original video creators you source for your videos does not take away from your videos. It does generate good will and karma in the community and is a general good practice.

Third, pay attention to the video technical details. If you are creating videos for YouTube then you likely will only want to work in 1080p instead of focusing on 4k. Pay attention to make sure videos are high enough quality to include in your work. Using 1080p will ensure most are but if you want 4k videos only you will be limited on free websites.

Finally, remember that free sites for b-roll footage are not the same as paying for video content. You will have to sort through a lot of content and not everything will be top tier. Many amateurs upload content to free sites and you’ll have to evaluate a lot of videos to decide what to use.

What is a cash cow YouTube channel?

Cash cow channels on YouTube are channels designed entirely to make money.

These channels do not rely on a personality and the entire content can be outsourced to a team of freelancers or employees.

The videos are often designed to get as many views as possible in higher paying niches. The focus is on getting views to generate revenue rather than building community or other possible purposes.

Cash cow channels are all about making money on YouTube without being a personality in front of the camera. This allows you to pay others to make the content that then earns money. It removes you from the content creation grind and instead creates an asset that earns money each month without your work.

How do cash cow YouTube channels work?

Cash cow channel owners pay people to write scripts, gather b-roll videos, create voiceovers, and edit the videos. Then the finished video is uploaded to their YouTube channel.

Videos are created around popular topics that drive lots of views and can generate large amounts of ad revenue.

Cash cow channels are mainly monetized by ad revenue on YouTube.

They can also successfully use affiliate marketing to drive up income. Many channels also use Amazon affiliate links and other affiliate programs to generate additional revenue.

  • How To Get A Custom YouTube Channel URL

The process for changing your YouTube channel URL changed recently so this tutorial shows you how to change your YouTube channel URL in 2021.

Having a custom URL for your channel helps with branding your channel and makes it easy to remember and share with potential viewers.

In this video and tutorial post I show you how to:

    • set up your custom YouTube channel URL
    • delete your custom channel URL and pick a new one
    • options for choosing your custom URL for YouTube
    • how to change your custom YouTube channel URL
    • custom YouTube URL requirements

With this process for selecting and changing your channel URL you’ll be able to quickly and easily pick the channel URL you want!

Custom URL for Your YouTube Channel Step By Step

How to get your custom YouTube channel URL step by step:

    1. Sign in to YouTube Studio for your account
    2. From the left menu, select Customization
    3. From the top menu, select the Basic info tab
    4. Under the Channel URL sections, click Set a custom URL for your channel
    5. In the box, you’ll see your current URL and your potential custom URL. You can add extra letters or numbers to make your custom URL unique to your channel.
    6. Click the blue Publish button in the top right of the page.
    7. Click Confirm on the popup screen to confirm your custom URL.

    YouTube Channel Custom URLs Details

Why would you want a custom URL for your channel? Creating a custom URL is an easy to remember URL that you can share with your audience. It’s easier to remember, better for branding, and customizes your channel.

Instead of have a channel that is youtube.com/ceJWE8732fjKEWNF# you will instead be able to have a channel URL that is youtube.com/penniesnotperfection for example. It’s much cleaner and easier to remember or share.

You get to choose your URL but there are some things you can base it on:

    • Display name
    • YouTube username
    • Current vanity URLs
    • Linked website name

You can also choose the capitalization options so that you can make words stand out of not. For example you can choose either of the following:

    • youtube.com/c/yourcustomname
    • youtube.com/c/YourCustomName

This gives you even more flexibility to use the custom URL feature for your channel to reinforce your branding.

    Custom URL Eligibility

Who is eligible to get a custom channel URL? There are some requirements you need to hit before you are able to set up your custom URL.

To create a custom URL for your channel, your YouTube account needs to:

    • Have 100 or more subscribers
    • Be at least 30 days old
    • Have an uploaded profile picture
    • Have uploaded banner image

    That’s it!

The great thing about custom URLs is that it is one of the first things you get to do on YouTube while building your audience. Most features won’t unlock until 1,000 or even 10,000 subscribers, but at 100 subscribers you get a custom URL!

It’s important to note that a custom URL can be changed or removed by YouTube at any time. This could include things like copyright infringement or when an account is deleted.

    Growing Your YouTube Channel

Once you’ve got 100 subscribers and have selected your custom URL, then it’s time to keep growing until you hit 1,000 subscribers and more!

If you want to grow and actually make money from your Youtube channel then the following tips should help.

    Get Useful Growth Tools

Use a free tool like TubeBuddy to evaluate your competition, research keywords, and make better videos.

TubeBuddy has a free version as well as a couple paid plans. You can get a lot out of the free version as a newbie and when you are ready you can go to the next level.

I love TubeBuddy for the SEO help but also the bulk management tools, canned comment responses, A/B testing, end screen templates and more.

Here are the SEO tools you have access to inside TubeBuddy:

    • view and copy video tags from another channel
    • tag rankings so you can track where you rank
    • suggested tags for your videos
    • keyword explorer
    • search rankings
    • best practices audit

All of those tools help you get your video ranked on YouTube so you get more views. TubeBuddy helps improve your SEO and increase search traffic that will double your views over time.

    Make Good Videos

Seriously, making good videos is how you grow on YouTube. There are a lot of additional factors but you won’t grow if you make bad videos.

Here are a few of the best tips from successful creators I’ve followed about making good videos:

    • Get to the point in your videos. Don’t ramble on for a long period at the beginning where people will fall off. Study your old videos too see where people drop off.
    • Make your videos provide value. If your videos are educational then make them very educational. If they are entertainment based then they should provide value by making your viewer feel something. Think of each video and consider what value it is providing someone.
    • Audio quality matters the most even over video quality. You can have top notch video but if your audio is bad people will stop watching.
    • Focus on your presentation and story telling skills. When you first start making videos you probably won’t be very good at this but it’s something that makes the best YouTubers connect with their audience.
    • Every video on your channel is providing some type of value. That value might be education or entertainment or just a feeling like someone belongs. You need to recognize what value you are providing and then put your own unique spin on it.

Remember that these are all things that you can work on and you can’t compare yourself to other creators. You should work hard to improve your skills and tune out the distractions of others.

    Build Community

Having a community around your channel and your videos is another great way to guarantee successful video launches and continued success. Building community can be done in a few ways:

    • commenting on other youtube channels
    • responding to all of your comments
    • referencing viewers and comments in your videos
    • giving shoutouts to people in your community
    • giving your viewers a nickname and expected phrases

Those are just a few ways I’ve found to build my community but you can find what works for you! The most successful YouTube channels have an element of community around them.

Those are just some of the ways I’ve learned how to grow my channel and consistently doubled my channel size each year I’ve been on Youtube while still keeping consistent and engaged subscribers.

    Learn From YouTube Experts

Another great way to grow on YouTube (and save a ton of time) is to learn from experts who have already done it.

You can book one on one time or take a course like my friend Erika’s course Mastering YouTube for the Busy Professional (affiliate link).

She went from 0 subscribers to over 70,000 and $100,000 earned from YouTube in just one year. I’ve learned a lot from her about both getting views from trending topics and outsourcing to grow faster.

Taking a course like this or from any big YouTuber will help you learn faster and grow faster because you will make less mistakes.

Every month I make $8,000 – $10,000 per month from my YouTube videos. It has changed my life which is why I freely share info on how to make money with a YouTube channel.

The money I make on YouTube helped me to pay off my debt, build an emergency fund, and QUIT my 9-5 job. Making money from YouTube changed my life and I want to share what I’ve learned to help others do the same.

How do you make money on YouTube? How do you grow a channel so that it’s sustainable and able to earn you enough money to pay for bills or even support you full time?

Make money on YouTube: how to do it from a six figure YouTuber

In this post I’m going over:

    • how to make money on YouTube
    • different money making strategies
    • tips on how to earn with different methods
    • resources to help you earn more on YouTube

This post will cover everything from how you can make money with ads to how to diversify your income and make more.

I’m giving you insight into what it takes to actually make money on YouTube after three years of learning how to do it on my own and hitting a six figure income (without a huge channel).

I hope these tips on how to grow your channel so it is large enough to make a difference in your life financially.

How do YouTube channels make money?

If you are a YouTuber or want to make videos on YouTube then you probably want to know how you can make money from doing.

There are people who make a full time income from just YouTube – but how do they manage it?

There are 5 main ways most YouTubers make money:

    1. Ad revenue
    2. Affiliate marketing
    3. Brand deals: Sponsored videos & Partnerships
    4. Community: Channel Memberships & Patreon
    5. Sales: Product sales & merch

I’m will focus a lot on ad revenue and affiliate marketing because that is how I make the majority of my money from Youtube! They are my favorite ways to earn money because they can be very passive and they are great for new YouTubers.

A new YouTube channel can’t make much money doing brand deals and sponsored videos, but they can promote products and make money through affiliate marketing.

How to Make Money On YouTube

I’m a small YouTuber but this is my favorite side hustle to earn money because even though it has taken a ton of work upfront, I can do it while being around my baby and family.

I started YouTube just to share videos of my family’s Alaska vacation with friends but it sparked a creative passion that I never expected to find.

One reason why I love YouTube is because I don’t have to leave to sell more of my time for money. I can make a video once and then it continues to earn and grow as time goes on and new people find it. There are millions and billions of people out there potentially waiting to see my videos. It’s an endless opportunity!

Another reason why I like YouTube is because I can keep side hustling and earning money online to get to freedom while also supporting others! It’s another platform to share my message of financial encouragement and motivation. There is a huge community on YouTube encouraging and supporting each other as we pay off debt, build businesses, and change our lives financially.

Luckily I have been earning money from both of my Youtube channels for a while now. While I’m not YouTube rich or quitting my job any time soon, I do make enough money that it is helping us pay off debt and improve our lives financially.

If you’ve been curious about how people make money off YouTube, keep reading as I share all my income sources!

The income sources for my channel include (affiliate links to each):

You can see an example of my income here: Online Income Report (An Average Month)

Other creators also do more intricate brand deals, channel sponsorships, create membership sites or sell merchandise. There are a lot of different ways to make money surrounding a YouTube channel.

Make Money On YouTube With Ad Revenue

YouTube ad revenue can be very lucrative in certain niches and there are many YouTube creators out there currently living on the ad revenue from their channels.

I’ve had a lot of my YouTube subscribers ask questions about how YouTube ads work and hopefully this sheds a little bit of light on how YouTubers generate income with ads on their videos.

I’m sharing how much YouTube paid me for two million video views and how exactly YouTube advertising works.

This is a video about a lower paying niche but it shows what can be possible with ad revenue. In some of my recent online income updates I’ve shared that I’m making over $3,000 most months from just YouTube ad revenue.

I also want you to know that it is possible to earn money on this platform through ad revenue even if you aren’t a big channel. Neither of my channels is over 20k subs but I’m still earning a good amount of money via ads because I’ve focused on getting views over getting subscribers.

It is 100% possible to make money on YouTube. It is not easy to do, but it is possible.

    How YouTube Ads Work

I wanted to clear up some things about ad rates and how ads on Youtube work. There are many different factors that go into different ad rates for channels and this determines how much YouTube creators make for each video on their channel.

YouTube pays creators a split of the ad revenue on each video. YouTube take a chunk for supplying the platform and tools for creators and channel creators take a chunk for supplying their content to YouTube’s hungry audience.

Ad revenue on videos is determined by factors like:

    • audience location
    • audience interaction with the ad
    • audience demographics
    • CPM
    • number of ads in a video

Clearly there are a lot of factors you can’t control and depend entirely on your audience. You have even less control when a video goes viral and hits different audiences. YouTube makes sure ads are served up that benefit both the viewer. As a creator the main things that you can control is making good content and making sure you turn on a couple ads per video.

There are many, many factors to determining the ad earnings for a video and I didn’t even cover some in the video like number of ads you include in your video!

    Growing Your YouTube Ad Revenue

In order to make more on YouTube from ads you need to get more people to watch more ads. It’s really that simple. But there are many different tips for accomplishing this so here are a few of my favorites:

    • Add more ads to your videos including before the video, after the video and mid-roll ads. More ads increases your CPM because more people watch more ads during each viewing.
    • Create longer videos so you can get to the 10 minute mark which enables mid-roll ads. Of course if your content needs to be shorter, then don’t stretch it out. The important thing is to keep viewers ENGAGED for the whole video.
    • Make your content binge worthy so the viewer goes from one video to the next. You can do this with series, playlists, and calling out specific videos to watch next at the end of a video. This guides the viewer to watch another video which makes your channel grow and increases your ad revenue.
    • Create evergreen content that people will be able to watch again and again or find useful any time they find it in the future. This gives your video a longer earning period.
    • Make videos on popular or trending topics to ride waves of interest and large viewership increases. An example of this is the many channels who made videos about the stimulus program. Some channels were able to gain millions of views within a month which made them a lot of money in ad revenue!
    • Great good videos that people want to watch and share! This will definitely help your ad revenue grow because the more your videos are watched and shared the more money you can make.

Those are a few of the best tips for growing your ad revenue on YouTube!

    Make Money With Sponsorships

Most successful, well-paid YouTubers earn the majority of their income from brand sponsorships. For many niches it’s is the most lucrative way to monetize your content.

Sponsorships are when a company pays a creator to promote their brand or product in a piece of content.

Brand sponsorships on YouTube come in a variety of forms:

    • fully dedicated videos
    • 30-60 second integrated sponsor messages in videos
    • Community posts
    • Long term brand partnerships over multiple videos

Sponsored content often has a much higher rate than ads or other monetization forms. Brands want to get in front of specific, engaged audiences and YouTube creators can be compensated well for this.

    Make Money With Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is where you promote products to your audience and then earn a commission when someone makes a purchase through your unique affiliate link.

You earn money by selling other people’s products.

The commissions for those sales can range from 4% to 70% of the product sales price.

As you can see, you can earn major amounts of money when you are earning 50% or more of a product price without having to create the product.

Affiliate marketing works in the same way as many old school referral programs and allows people to earn money through their blog or social media platforms by talking about things they love. It actually works well for all parties involved because you are only paid when you make a sale, it does not increase consumer cost, and the company providing the product does not have to pay upfront in case you don’t provide sales.

There are affiliate programs for all types of products and in every industry. There are affiliate programs where you can earn money promoting clothing, makeup, crafts, credit cards, bank accounts, ebooks, online courses and more. Regardless of what you plan to talk about online there will be an affiliate marketing program that will fit into your niche.

Affiliate programs will pay commissions in three different ways:

    1. Pay per sale – You will earn a commission only when someone makes a purchase through your affiliate link.
    2. Pay per lead – You will earn a commission if someone signs up for a free trial or creates a free account or somehow otherwise gives a company their email address as a lead.
    3. Pay per click – This style of program is where you are paid money whenever someone clicks through one of your links.

There are many types of affiliate marketing programs but the most common one is pay per sale. That is what I will be referring to and giving tips to since it is what I use the most.

Best Affiliate Marketing Programs For Youtube Channels

There are several affiliate networks with multiple affiliate programs I’ve used very successfully that I want to share for any channels looking to monetize.

An affiliate network is simply a company that runs multiple affiliate programs for different companies. It’s a great way for YouTubers to get access to multiple companies in one place. I highly recommend joining each network listed below and then finding individual companies that match your content within each network.

    ShareASale

ShareASale – ShareASale is an affiliate network which means it is a platform where you can sign up for multiple affiliate programs within it.

There are a couple great programs within ShareASale and this is one of the few networks that also offers the ability to earn recurring revenue through two-tier programs.

To start earning affiliate income with ShareASale, go sign up and look through the programs available. ShareASale was acquired by Awin so they actually have even more options now than before!

    Awin

Awin – This is another affiliate network where you can sign up for multiple programs in one place. There are many good programs here and Awin consistently earns me hundreds of dollars monthly, but mainly from one program: Etsy.

That’s right, Etsy has an affiliate marketing program! They offer their affiliates 4% of anything someone purchases through an affiliate link. While 4% isn’t much, it can really add up if people are buying budget sets monthly and more.

I highly recommend you use the Etsy affiliate program to link to your favorite shops on Etsy. You get a small 4% kickback but it doesn’t cost the shop or the customer anything extra. It comes from Etsy’s fees and is a great way for you to earn money by promoting small businesses on Etsy.

To promote Etsy shops or any Awin affiliate partner you should go start an account with Awin

    FlexOffers

FlexOffers is an affiliate network that is geared toward many financial affiliate programs so it’s a great option if you have a channel about budgeting or any financial topic.

Within FlexOffers there are a number of financial programs on multiple topics about money:

    • banking
    • credit repair & reporting
    • debt services
    • home loans
    • investment services
    • tax services

Clearly FlexOffers is the place to be if you are running a channel about personal finances and want to find affiliate programs to promote!

To promote these financial products you should go start an account at FlexOffers and search for any of the programs in the network.

    Impact Radius

Impact Radius is another affiliate marketing network that works very well for YouTube creators.

On this network you can find a lot of companies that you’ve probably seen other promote like Canva, Harry’s, FuboTV and more.

To make money with this network you can sign up for Impact Radius here.

    Affiliate Marketing Tips For YouTubers

If you are a YouTuber with a budgeting related channel and want to start use affiliate marketing to earn money then here are some of my favorite tips:

    • Mention your links in the video and direct your audience to your description box.
    • Include an affiliate disclaimer link in your description box that is clear you will make a commission.
    • Link to specific products you use instead of the general page. The less steps between a buyer and the purchase the better. Specific links convert better than generic ones.
    • Use products in the programs that you are promoting as an affiliate. If you have a choice to use products in the program or not, use the ones you can promote as an affiliate. People always want to know where you got things.
    • Leave a link to what you used in the video in a pinned comment.
    • Respond to any questions where people ask where you got something and give them the affiliate link. (This is just polite practice as well that builds trust with your audience.)

Those are just a few of my best tips for how I’ve managed to share products I love like my favorite budget stickers shops and cash envelope makers while also earning income for doing it!

Make Money On YouTube With Products & Merch

Another way many YouTubers make money is by creating and selling merchandise or various types of products.

Many of the most financially successful creators have created product lines and real businesses surrounding their channels. Here I’m going to focus on the more common options: print on demand merchandise and digital products.

Sell Merch With Print On Demand

Thanks to the concept of Print On Demand companies it is very easy for YouTubers to make money selling merchandise.

Instead of creating huge amounts of inventory you instead can use these companies to make items for you only when you make sales from your audience.

All you have to do is make the designs and upload them to these sites. These print on demand companies then create the product whenever you make a sale.

Sites you can use to sell merch:

If you have a great brand and catchy phrases you can successfully create merch that your audience will buy.

    Sell Related Digital Products

Digital products are a great way to monetize your YouTube audience. Many YouTubers do this through creating and selling courses through sites like Teachable or selling printables on Etsy.

Creating digital products like courses is a wonderful way to monetize because you do the work upfront but then can be paid over and over again. Digital products are a great passive income source model for YouTubers.

Other digital products I’ve seen YouTube creators sell successfully include:

    • Ebooks
    • Guides and workbooks
    • Cheatsheets
    • Plans & Instructions for projects
    • Planners
    • Printable sticker kits
    • Spreadsheets

I’ve done this personally by creating digital products related to my channel that I sell through Etsy and other websites.

If you want to learn about earning income from selling products?

These posts will give you ideas of products you can make and sell for your channel as well as how to do it.

Make Money On YouTube With Community Support

Another way to make money on YouTube is by allowing your community to support you financially.

There are a couple ways to do this. The most popular options include:

    • Patreon
    • BuyMeACoffee
    • YouTube Memberships
    • YouTube Superchats & Applause

Patreon allows you to build community support with a membership style monthly billing process. You can offer extra goodies to your patrons or just allow them to show their support.

You can also do this through YouTube for a more seamless process though you lose more of the revenue to YouTube’s cut.

Personally I’ve been experimenting with both of these revenue streams since I post a lot of content for free. Both have had signups though neither one has been a huge financial success. I’m still so grateful for the support people are giving me to create content.

How Much Money Small YouTube Creators Make

In the video above, I’m sharing what I made from YouTube ads since I’ve been monetized with my main channel and giving you a look at my analytics of my best performing videos. This video helped answer the questions I got often about what I made as a small creator.

I started my channel without any expectations of making money on YouTube. I made small amounts less than $20 a month when I started and then when my channel was demonetized for being too small, I really couldn’t imagine getting to this point of earning money. It seemed so far out of reach.

Yet with my channel’s growth and my connections to larger YouTube channel creators, I now see that I’m still just at the beginning of what is possible with YouTube income!

I’ve always loved seeing real numbers from other creators which is why I wanted to share my own experiences and numbers with making money on YouTube. I’m not a videographer or a technical person so I wanted to share what a regular person earning income from this hobby could potentially make.

    Growing Your YouTube Channel

If you want to make more from your small Youtube channel then the best way to do it is to grow your channel. The more people that find you the more money you will make.

Here are the ways I’ve learned to grow on YouTube.

    Get Useful YouTube Growth Tools

I resisted using a paid tool like TubeBuddy for a while because I thought I was smart enough to do it on my own but when I finally caved and bought a subscription I kicked myself for not doing it sooner.

Some of my other favorite tools I’ve used inside TubeBuddy while growing my channel:

    • canned responses to reply to comments faster
    • comment filters
    • upload checklist
    • card templates
    • end screen templates
    • video topic planner

Those are a few of my favorite tools within my account to grow. TubeBuddy has a free version with limited tools listed here and paid accounts when you really want to grow (which are amazing for the price).

    Learn About YouTube SEO

There are tons of videos on Youtube about how to use SEO on the platform. Watch some. Learn about what keywords are and how to use them. For many channels, search is the key way they are found and earn money.

To shorten your journey in learning and implementing SEO, I again recommend TubeBuddy because it’s like an all in one solution for YouTubers.

Here are the SEO tools you have access to inside TubeBuddy:

    • view and copy video tags from another channel
    • tag rankings so you can track where you rank
    • suggested tags for your videos
    • keyword explorer
    • search rankings
    • best practices audit

And even more! All of those tools help you get your video ranked on YouTube so you get more views. It seriously has more tools than I’ve even had time to use yet but what I have used above has helped take my videos to the next level.

Since I’ve been using TubeBuddy my SEO has improved and my search traffic has doubled. Seriously, it doubled! TubeBuddy has been an incredibly helpful and the first month I used it I actually doubled the views on my channel going from 45,000 views in a month to 110,000 in a month.

    Make Good YouTube Videos

Seriously, making good videos is how you grow on YouTube. There are a lot of additional factors but you won’t grow if you make bad videos.

You should be making videos that you know are good. If they make you cringe when you are rewatching to edit, how do you expect anyone else to enjoy them?

Build Community Around Your YouTube Channel

Make money on YouTube with Erika's YouTube course

She went from 0 subscribers to over 70,000 and $100,000 earned from YouTube in just one year. I’ve learned a lot from her about both getting views from trending topics and outsourcing to grow faster.

Taking a course like this or from any big YouTuber will help you learn faster and grow faster because you will make less mistakes.

All of these things will help you grow faster after you’ve hit your first 100 subscribers. Best wishes on growing your channel to a huge success!

The REAL Truth About Making Money On YouTube

Making money on YouTube is not a fast process.

In fact, even after consistently making videos for two years I was a small YouTuber only making $400ish a month on ads. I was nowhere near a fulltime income from YouTube even after putting in hours and hours of work.

That isn’t to discourage anyone trying to make money on YouTube.

I did eventually grow my income to a six figure number, but it took years of work.

Be aware that it isn’t fast and it does involve a lot of work! The honest truth about YouTube is that it’s hard to make money.

For every channel that succeeds and earns a massive amount of money, there are thousands who toil away unnoticed and eventually give up.

If you want to be successful on YouTube you need to go one of two ways: 1) do it for the creative outlet and not for money 2) be very strategic and have a business plan from the beginning.

Either way, you have to take into consideration the types of videos you make on YouTube and the types of advertisers that might want to advertise to your audience. If you are in a niche that doesn’t have high paying advertisements then you will need a lot more views to make the same amount of money as someone in another niche.

Knowing a bit about how YouTube ads work can help you create your own plan for your channel’s success. Hopefully this look into my analytics and more information about how to make money on YouTube has been helpful for you!
