  • Etsy Vacation Mode: When & How To Use It

    Etsy’s “vacation mode” is a way to pause your shop sales in case you need to step away from fulfilling orders for customers.

    Some Etsy sellers love to use it and others refuse to take advantage of this feature for fear it will negatively affect their shop.

    There are many legitimate reasons to use vacation mode:

    • You’re temporarily unable to run your shop for any reason.
    • An emergency happens and you are unable to manage your shop.
    • You’re traveling for a period that does not allow you to run your shop.
    • You are sick and can’t fulfill orders physically.
    • When you give birth and need a maternity leave.
    • You need a break to catch up on a large amount of current orders.

    All of these reasons can benefit from you turning on vacation mode.

    Any time you are unable to fulfill orders in a reasonable time frame then you should consider using vacation mode.

    If you are unable to fulfill orders for your shop it will always be better to use vacation mode than provide negative customer service which will permanently affect your shop.

    How To Put Your Etsy Shop On Vacation Mode

    Putting your Etsy shop in vacation mode is quite simple. This video shows how to put your shop in vacation mode.

    Here’s how to put your shop in vacation mode:

    1. Sign in to your account on Etsy.com
    2. Click Shop Manager in the top menu to go to your admin section
    3. Click on Settings in the left menu
    4. Click on Options
    5. Click the Vacation Mode tab at the top of the page
    6. Change the setting to On
    7. Fill in a temporary vacation mode shop announcement and Message auto-reply
    8. Click Save

    This is all you need to do to turn on vacation mode!

    However, using vacation mode for your Etsy shop is a hotly debated strategy among Etsy sellers. Using it should be strategic and you should make to use it in a way that does not hurt your shop.

    What Happens On Etsy Shop Vacation Mode?

    So what actually happens to your Etsy shop when you put in on vacation mode?

    It’s slightly more complicated than just turning off your shop. Here are the things that will change for your shop once it is on vacation mode:

    Your Etsy shop on Vacation Mode:

    • An announcement notice will appear at the top of your shop page saying that you’re taking a short break. The Add to cart button will be grayed out so customers can not add anything to purchase.
    • Your shop will still appear if someone searches for your exact shop name. Your shop will not show up in search as an auto-suggestion or for any other search based shopping tools.
    • Your items also won’t appear in Search. Vacation mode essentially removes all traces of you from the search algorithm while it is on.
    • People signed in to Etsy who visit your shop can sign up to be notified by email of your return when you take your shop off of vacation mode.
    • Your backend/admin section still works and you have access to your orders, cases, and messages.
    • You can still work on current and past orders. This means you can still issue refunds, cancel orders, and print Etsy shipping labels. You can’t take new orders but you still need to fulfill outstanding orders and provide customer service and deal with open cases.

    Your Etsy shop listings on Vacation Mode:

    • During vacation mode you can make edits to current listings. This works just the same way as it does when your shop is not on vacation.
    • You can also list new items and save them as drafts. You can’t publish new listings but you can use vacation mode to get the listings ready for your return. You will not be charged any listing fees until the listing is actually published after you return from vacation mode.
    • Per Etsy’s website, “If you have auto-renew turned on for listings in your shop, these listings set to auto-renew will continue to be charged a renewal fee when they expire.”

    Additional Etsy features on Vacation Mode:

    • Vacation Mode does not impact Etsy Plus subscription billing. Your subscription fees will continue during vacation mode unless you cancel your Etsy plus subscription.
    • Star Seller eligibility is determined regardless of vacation mode. They review the last 3 months of your shop’s performance on Etsy. If you come back from vacation and you reach the Star Seller criteria for the current review period, then you’ll be eligible for a Star Seller badge.

    Those are the most important things that are affected in your shop when you turn on vacation mode.

    It’s important to understand what will be affected and how these changes will impact what you do during the time you have vacation mode turned on.

    Etsy Vacation Mode Message Examples

    If you are going to put your Etsy shop on Vacation Mode for the first time you might not know how to handle your away message or dealing with customers during this time.

    Your Vacation Mode message should accomplish a few things:

    • make it clear why you are on vacation
    • give dates when your vacation will begin and end
    • be authentic and natural but also professional
    • free of any promises for customers

    You want to be clear, firm, and professional.

    Here are some Etsy vacation mode message examples:

    Thank you for visiting my Etsy shop (name of your shop). I’m currently taking a short break so I can work on creating all of your beautiful items. During this time I will not be accepting new orders but I will be answering conversations and will get back to you as soon as I can.

    I expect to be back from this break the first week of May.

    Welcome to my Etsy shop (name of your shop)! I’m currently taking a break while I’m out of the country but will be returning the last week of July. You can sign up to be notified when I return and products are restocked! Until then I am available to answer any messages and will get back to you within 24 hours.

    Does Vacation Mode Hurt Your Shop?

    “Does vacation mode hurt your Etsy shop?”

    ‍This is a common question I see on my videos and in Etsy groups online. There is concern that Etsy vacation mode can cause a drop in sales and views.

    There are varying opinions on this topic and it’s caused a lot of controversy. Some people are convinced vacation mode tanks our Etsy search rankings and share horror stories of never recovering.

    But for each horror story there are many other Etsy sellers who report no negative effects before and after vacation mode.

    Etsy itself says that vacation mode does not affect your listing quality score which is one of the main ranking factors for Etsy search.

    You will always be able to find people on both sides of this argument but ultimately what Etsy says about vacation mode is the truth. It’s also clear they prefer you use vacation mode instead of being unable to fulfill orders on time an angering customers.

    Etsy Vacation Mode Alternatives

    What if you need a bit of a break but don’t want to use vacation mode?

    Here are a few alternatives to enabling vacation mode:

    • extend the time to fulfill and ship in your Shop’s policies
    • hire someone to help you fulfill your orders
    • put up a “late to ship” or “delayed orders” message with a discount

    There are ways to avoid using vacation mode if it works out the best for you and your customers.

    How To Turn Off Vacation Mode

    After using Vacation Mode you will eventually be ready to return to your Etsy shop. When this happens it is time to turn off Vacation Mode.

    Here’s how to turn off Vacation Mode for your Etsy shop:

    1. Sign in to your account on Etsy.com
    2. Click Shop Manager in the top menu to go to your admin section
    3. Click on Settings in the left menu
    4. Click on Options
    5. Click the Vacation Mode tab at the top of the page
    6. Change the option to Off
    7. Click Save

    That’s it! Vacation Mode is off!

    When you turn it off your shop will then return to it’s normal situation with everything live and you will start reappearing in searches.

    My Experience With Selling On Etsy

    I’ve sold digital products on Etsy for several years and earned tens of thousands of dollars.

    What began with one small printable that earned $25 in the first month eventually became a side hustle of $1,000+ per month. It has been an incredible side hustle to sell things on Etsy.

    After selling on Etsy for a few years I’ve noticed a few keys to success:

    • Selling items that are well priced in your niche compared to competitors

    One of my favorite b-roll sources is the website called Pexels. They claim to be “The best free stock photos, royalty free images & videos shared by creators.”

    As a creator I believe the best part of Pexels is that they keep the licensing and legal side simple.

    As they explain: “All photos and videos on Pexels can be downloaded and used for free.”

    Here are some additional details they offer about using the b-roll:

    • All photos and videos on Pexels are free to use. 
    • Attribution is not required.
    • Giving credit to the photographer or Pexels is not necessary but always appreciated. 
    • You can modify the photos and videos from Pexels. Be creative and edit them as you like.

    This makes things incredibly easy as a YouTube creator who needs to use other people’s videos to create a channel!

    In addition to these free b-roll websites you can also find many sites where you can purchase b-roll footage at a low rate.

    Using Free B-Roll Footage Websites

    These are best free B-roll footage websites available to help create cash cow YouTube channels.

    There are a few things you need to keep in mind whenever you are using these free b-roll footage websites.

    First, keep licensing and fine print in mind as you choose the videos you want to use. Do your due diligence and read the small print and licensing details attached to the video content.

    Second, credit video creators where necessary and also when possible. Giving credit to the original video creators you source for your videos does not take away from your videos. It does generate good will and karma in the community and is a general good practice.

    Third, pay attention to the video technical details. If you are creating videos for YouTube then you likely will only want to work in 1080p instead of focusing on 4k. Pay attention to make sure videos are high enough quality to include in your work. Using 1080p will ensure most are but if you want 4k videos only you will be limited on free websites.

    Finally, remember that free sites for b-roll footage are not the same as paying for video content. You will have to sort through a lot of content and not everything will be top tier. Many amateurs upload content to free sites and you’ll have to evaluate a lot of videos to decide what to use.

    • Keywords volume is estimated. Etsy API does not release it’s search data to third party sources so the actual keyword volume is an estimate. Sale Samurai can accurately track and compile things like number or sales and shipping days but the keyword volume is not directly from Etsy.
    • There is no free plan. With no free option, the cost could be prohibitive to new sellers. If you haven’t made a sale yet it is hard to invest in a monthly expense. You can try it for a couple months and quit but even $20 or $30 can feel like a lot when you have no revenue.
    • Only works with keywords. Keywords are incredibly important to Etsy SEO, but it’s not the only thing sellers should improve. Sale Samurai currently does not optimize photos or other listing elements.

    These are the best ways to monetize faceless YouTube videos. These are ideal because they are close to passive income once you’ve created and launched the video.

    Let’s look at each of these methods for making money on YouTube without showing your face.

    Ad Revenue

    YouTube ad revenue can be very lucrative in certain niches. There are many YouTube creators out there currently living on the ad revenue from their channels, myself included!

    I get a lot of questions about this since I openly talk about living off my YouTube income as a full time creator.

    People want to know:

    • how do ads work?
    • how much can you earn?
    • what does a million views on YouTube earn?

    In the video below I share how much YouTube paid me for two million video views and how exactly YouTube advertising works.

    This example is from a video where I did not show my face. It was a tutorial video showing my hands only!

    YouTube pays video creators a split of the ad revenue on each video and your total revenue will depend on the views you can get along with other factors.

    Ad revenue on videos is determined by factors like:

    • audience location
    • audience demographics
    • interaction with the ad
    • number of ads in a video
    • what advertisers are willing to pay

    You can’t control everything related to ad revenue since there are so many factors. But you can work on getting more and more views which will turn into income for you.

    Growing Your YouTube Ad Revenue

    In order to make more on YouTube from ads you need to get more people to watch more ads. It’s really that simple.

    Here are some of my favorite ways to earn more on YouTube via ads:

    • Add more ads to your videos. You can have ads before the video, after the video and in the middle with mid-roll ads. More ads increases your CPM (what you are paid per 1,0000 views). With more ads you will earn more because more people watch more ads during each viewing.
    • Create longer videos so you can get to the 10 minute mark which enables mid-roll ads. Inserting mid-roll ads give you a chance at a higher revenue total per video without doing anything else.
    • Make your content binge worthy and engaging. You want viewers to watch the whole video and move from one video to the next. The more videos a viewer watches from you the more money you will make.
    • Create evergreen content that people will be able to watch multiple times or find useful any time they find it. Making vides that can be helpful years from now gives you a longer earning period. This creates a level of passive income for you each month.
    • Great good videos that people want to watch and share! This will help your ad revenue grow because the more your videos are watched and shared the more money you can make. It also helps because sharing gives YouTube signals that your video is good and they should promote it more.

    Those are a few of the best tips for growing your ad revenue on YouTube!

    Affiliate Marketing

    Affiliate marketing is where you promote products to your audience and then earn a commission when someone makes a purchase through your unique affiliate link. 

    You earn money by selling other people’s products. The commissions for those sales can range from 4% to 70% of the product sales price.

    It’s a great way to earn money via YouTube videos because you can promote related products to your videos and then earn commissions when people buy.

    There are affiliate programs for all types of products and in every industry. Regardless of what you plan to talk about online there will be an affiliate marketing program that will fit into your niche.

    Affiliate programs will pay commissions in three different ways:

    1. Pay per sale – You will earn a commission only when someone makes a purchase through your affiliate link.
    2. Paid per lead – You will earn a commission if someone signs up for a free trial or creates a free account or somehow otherwise gives a company their email address as a lead.
    3. Pay per click – This style of program is where you are paid money whenever someone clicks through one of your links.  

    You can find affiliate marketing programs by searching your niche + affiliate program or by joining affiliate networks. Affiliate networks host multiple affiliate programs so you can join multiple in one place.

    Growing Your YouTube Ad Revenue

    If you want to make money on YouTube without showing your face then affiliate marketing is a fantastic option. You can promote products and services without having to show yourself.

    Now sure how? Here are some of my favorite tips for earning with affiliate marketing on YouTube:

    • Mention your links in the video.
    • Tell people where to click the link – direct your audience to your description box or pinned comment.
    • Include an affiliate disclaimer link in your description box that is clear you will make a commission (legally you need to do this).
    • Link to specific products you use instead of the general page. The less steps between a buyer and the purchase the better. Specific links will convert better than generic ones.
    • Use the products that you are promoting as an affiliate. It’s easier to sell something when you actually use and like it. It’s also easier when people see you using it. People always want to know where you got things.
    • Leave a link to what you are promoting in the video in a pinned comment.
    • Respond to any questions where people ask where you got something and give them the affiliate link. (This is just polite practice as well that builds trust with your audience.)

    Affiliate marketing has actually earned me more than my ad revenue on YouTube. It’s one of my personal favorite revenue streams because I feel like it benefits all parties involved.

    Your listing SEO will be made up of a few parts: item title, item description, and tags.

    For each of these you will utilize the keywords you discovered during your research phase and implement them on your listing.

    Item Title

    The item title is used to create the page title for your listing and the beginning of the title is the most important.

    You should use the best keyword to clearly describe your product at the beginning of your item title. This should be a keyword shoppers will use and it will be the first things customers see on Etsy searches and in Google as well.

    Item Description

    The item description for your product is something I often see sellers neglect but it is very important for SEO.

    The first 160 characters of your item description is used to create a meta description. This description is what shows up in search engines and can influence people to click on your item or not.

    The whole description is important because search engines view all of the on page content as important. You should use this space to describe your product using various keywords you researched and people might use.

    Item Tags

    The keywords you used in your title and description will also be used for your tags.

    You can easily copy the keywords you used in your title and then paste them exactly as tags.

    Some of your longer keyword phrases won’t work as tags due to length. For these you can break them down into two tags if it makes sense.

    Adding the same keyword in the title and using it in the description and including it as a tag gives the signal to Etsy that this listing is very relevant for anyone searching that term.

    According to Etsy, links from outside websites to your listings improves their rankings. This is very similar to how SEO works for websites trying to rank for keywords on Google.

    Very few sellers focus on doing something like getting links to their listings. All of their time is focus on over optimizing listings which means this is a fantastic option to focus on.

    You can get links to your listings in a few ways:

    • start your own blog and link back to listings
    • get other bloggers and influencers to link to your products
    • pitch your products to reporters for potential news features

    Finding ways to promote your products outside of Etsy and earn links to your products will actually increase your visibility inside of Etsy via search.

    Those are just a few of the ways you can use search engine optimization on Etsy. Doing these things will improve the chances that people find you when searching.

    Things To Avoid

    While there is not a clear list of all the do’s and don’ts of Etsy SEO, there are a few common things to avoid with any form of SEO.

    Here are some things you should avoid doing:

    • Don’t stuff your listing with keywords. Write your listing content for people using relevant keywords where needed. Do not write strings of keywords that make no sense to the end user just to please a search engine.
    • Don’t use filler or useless content. Being useful to the customer means you have efficient and descriptive content that helps them on the buying decision. Anything beyond this just to try and rank for search terms does not help you.
    • Don’t buy links from other sources. You want to generate links back to your shop but you should never pay for these. That’s a no-no for most search engines. Focus instead of generating press and natural mentions of your shop.

    Those are a few things to avoid. Making sure you avoid these mistakes is one of the best Etsy SEO tips I can give some shop owners.

    In general use common sense and focus on your end user – not a search engine.
